Most women in China weren't educated during the time period Mulan followed. The women's job was to cook, weave, and care for her family. In the movie and/or play Mulan's main focus, at first, was to be chosen as a wife. She needed to be chosen as a wife and fulfill her womanly duties. If she wasn't chosen she wouldn't bring honor to her family. That's how it was with the women.
